How the free tier stays free
There is no trick. Hosting the site and running the processing pipeline costs money, and that money has to come from somewhere. Our approach is to fund the free tier primarily through advertising on non-tool pages — guides, FAQs, the blog — served by Google AdSense (publisher ID ca-pub-1004794055866437). Advertising does not appear inside the processing surface itself, and it does not read anything from the documents you upload.
We keep operating costs low by using a lean engineering team, a small number of well-chosen infrastructure providers, and a product that deliberately does not try to be everything. The less we build, the easier it is to keep what we have reliable. That is a feature, not a bug.
If and when we introduce a Pro tier, it will be genuinely additive: larger files, batch runs, API access, OCR. Nothing that is free today will be removed from the free tier as a result of a paid tier launching. That is a commitment, written here so future users can hold us to it.
Pricing FAQs
Is PDFWhirl really free?
Yes. Every tool on pdfwhirl.com is free to use without signup, without a credit card, and without hidden limits. The only paid feature that currently exists is a hypothetical Pro tier on the roadmap; it is not yet live.
Are there file size limits?
The free tier supports files up to 100 MB per upload. That comfortably covers the vast majority of everyday PDF tasks, including long reports and scanned multi-page documents. The planned Pro tier will raise this ceiling for users who routinely work with larger files.
How many files can I process per day?
There are no daily caps on the free tier. You can run tools as often as your workflow requires. Very high-volume scripted access may hit rate limits that are in place to protect the processing pool from abuse, but ordinary human use will not be affected.
Do you add watermarks to my files?
No. Output files are clean copies of the document you requested. We never add PDFWhirl branding to the files you process.
Is the free tier ad-supported?
Yes. Advertising appears on non-tool pages — guides, FAQs, blog posts — and is served by Google AdSense (publisher ID ca-pub-1004794055866437). Ads do not appear inside the tool workflow surface and do not read anything from your uploaded documents.
Can I make a donation if I want to support PDFWhirl?
We do not currently accept donations. If you would like to support the project, the most useful things you can do are telling colleagues about it, linking to relevant guides from your own site, and letting us know when something could be better.
Will the free tier ever be removed?
No. The free tier is a core part of what PDFWhirl is. Any paid tier that ships in the future will sit alongside the free tier, not replace it.
How will billing work when Pro launches?
Pro will be billed through a well-known payment processor such as Stripe. We will not store full payment card numbers on our servers. Subscription renewals will be clearly labelled, and a one-click cancellation will be available as required by applicable consumer-protection laws.
Do you offer discounts for education, non-profits, or teams?
When Pro launches we intend to offer educational and non-profit discounts, plus team pricing that scales sensibly. If this is relevant to your organisation, let us know so we factor your use case into the plan.
Can I get a refund on a paid plan?
Pro is not yet live, but when it is the standard terms will include a money-back period. The exact duration will be documented in the Terms and the checkout flow.
How are my files kept secure?
All uploads are encrypted with TLS in transit, stored with AES-256 at rest, and automatically deleted within two hours. PDFWhirl staff do not access uploaded files. See the Security page for the full programme.
Can I run PDFWhirl for my business?
Yes, the free tier is explicitly permitted for personal and professional use. Read the Terms and Conditions to understand what is in and out of scope, and contact us for enterprise deployments or custom needs.
